Gold Star Beer Counter
Brooklyn NY 11238
Very dimly lit after dark, this is a shrine to rare beers.
Directions - 2 / 3 train to Grand Army Plaza, walk clockwise against the traffic round the circle (Plaza Street East), turn left briefly on Vanderbilt Avenue, turn right on Sterling Place to Underhill Avenue (a short distance away). Alternatively, B / Q train to 7th Avenue, walk south for one block on Flatbush Avenue, turn left on Stirling Place to Underhill Avenue.
A shrine to rare and obsure beers, very dimly lit by candlelight after dark (so much so that you can't read the printed beer menus without assistance, so their candles have a good use). It's basically a bar, but takes a bite at the take home market also. The beers, both on tap and in bottle, are highly eclectic and obscure. Bottles are cheaper to take home and have two prices on the labels (look on the shelves for those). If visiting after dark, exercise caution - the right hand side furthest from the bar has a step up from all sides which is virtually impossible to see in the dark lighting. This is a big trip hazard, some 'caution' tape on the steps would be very helpful! No wifi or food. (9/2015)
This place is wonderful. More of a bar than a bottle shop, it nevertheless combines the two, offering a superb range of beers for consumption on or off site. They now do food such as meats, cheese and sausages, and it is also of very high quality. Light and airy during the day and a top place to spend a few hours.
