Ridgewood NY 11385
(Ridgewood / Glendale)
Unique heavy metal themed German beer hall.
Directions - M train to Seneca Avenue, walk north-west just over three short blocks.
This place is pretty unique, and celebrates the areas rich German heritage from a few decades ago. The beer list is almost entirely German imports, mostly from smaller breweries such as Mahr's, and all the music you will hear (except Mondays, see below) is heavy metal - at a decent volume, not deafening. The decor reflects these trends, with black and grey paint and signs in German painted onto the walls. The name 'Bierliechen' fittingly translates literally to 'Beer Corpse', apparently coined for Oktoberfest revellers who have imbibed too much and pass out in public. Beers are available in four different sizes, see the overhead blackboard for prices and volumes. Bar snacks are available which include vegan hot dogs, wursts, and grilled cheese sandwiches. There is a cosy back yard. A couple of foosball (table football) games feature near the entrance, and there are two pianos at the back. Weekly Goth nights are held on Mondays. The heavy black front doors are, ironically, said to have come from a church. Note that if you catch the eastbound B38 bus to here, this route unusually has two termini - it is only buses to Catalpa Avenue that go directly here. Metropolitan Avenue bound buses turn off five blocks before the bar, so check the destination before boarding. Very close to Milo's Yard (q.v.) (9/2015)
